The rule that actually matters
There is one principle underneath every TV height recommendation you will read: the centre of the screen should sit at the eye level of a seated viewer. Everything else (the 42-inch figure, the charts, the fireplace debate) is a consequence of that.
Eye level is the reference because it is the only position where the neck is neutral. Look straight ahead and the cervical spine carries the weight of your head efficiently. Tilt your head back for two hours and it does not. Screens mounted too high are the most common complaint after a wall-mount install, and the cause is almost always that the job was planned from the wall, centring the TV in the space above a console or a mantel, rather than from the sofa.
The widely quoted number is 42 in (107 cm) from floor to screen centre. That is not a standard handed down by a manufacturer; it is roughly the eye height of an adult sitting on a typical sofa. It is a good default and a poor substitute for measuring your own furniture.
Measuring your eye level (two minutes, saves a re-drill)
- Sit where you watch. Your usual seat, your usual posture: slouched if you slouch, reclined if you recline.
- Measure floor to eye. Run a tape from the floor to the centre of your eyes. Most people land between 38 and 44 in (97–112 cm).
- Average the household. If two people of different heights watch equally often, take the midpoint. A difference of two or three inches is imperceptible.
- Note your seating type. A low-slung modern sofa with a 15 in seat height puts eyes near 38 in. A firm, upright sofa puts them at or above 42 in.
Recliners change the answer. When the backrest drops, your eye level falls but your gaze direction rises. If you watch fully reclined most evenings, measure in that position and expect a higher mount than the chart suggests. This is one of the few situations where a taller install is genuinely correct.
Height chart by TV size
A 16:9 screen's picture height is about 0.49 × the diagonal, and its width about 0.87 × the diagonal. So a 65 in TV is roughly 32 in tall. Because the centre stays fixed at eye level, larger TVs mount lower at the bottom edge, the opposite of what most people assume.
The table below assumes a screen centre at 42 in (107 cm). If your measured eye level is different, shift every number by the same amount.

Two things fall out of this chart. First, an 85 in TV correctly mounted has its bottom edge at about knee height, which is why very large screens often sit better on a low console than on a wall. Second, if your bracket is already installed and the bottom edge is 40 in or more off the floor, the screen is too high regardless of size.
The one-line formula: floor-to-bottom-edge = your seated eye level − (diagonal × 0.245).
Living rooms
Standard sofa, standard room: screen centre at 40–44 in (102–112 cm). Beyond height, three living-room specifics are worth checking before you drill.
Viewing distance. For a 4K screen, a comfortable range is roughly 1 to 1.5 × the diagonal, or about 5.5 to 8 ft for a 65 in TV. Closer than that and a large screen forces you to scan across it; much further and you stop resolving 4K detail. Distance also feeds directly into the gaze-angle math below.
Furniture underneath. A media console 24 in high with a soundbar on top can collide with a correctly mounted 75 in TV. Measure the console and the soundbar together, then leave 3–4 in of clearance below the screen. If the numbers do not work, the console is usually the thing to change, not the height.
Off-centre seating. Horizontal position matters as much as height in rooms with an L-shaped sofa. Centre the screen on the primary seating position rather than on the wall. Where the wall centre and the seating centre differ by more than about a foot, a full-motion mount is the usual compromise.

Bedrooms
Bedroom viewing posture is different enough that the living-room number is simply wrong here. You watch propped against a headboard, semi-upright, sometimes lying flat.
- Measure sitting up in bed. With a mattress and foundation at 24–25 in and a torso above that, eye level typically lands at 46–52 in (117–132 cm).
- Mount higher than a living room, and tilt down. Screen centre at roughly 48–55 in (122–140 cm) with 10–15° of downward tilt covers both propped-up and lying-down positions.
- Check the footboard and dresser. A tall footboard or a dresser under the TV can force the screen up. Measure the sightline from the pillow, not from the doorway.
- Watch the room's proportions. Bedrooms are usually shorter than living rooms, so the same screen sits closer and the gaze angle climbs faster. A 65 in TV about 9 ft from the pillow is generally the practical ceiling in a standard bedroom.

Above a fireplace: the honest answer
The usual advice is "never." That is too blunt. Above-the-fireplace mounts fail for two measurable reasons, and both can be checked in advance.
1. The gaze angle
Mantels commonly put the screen centre at 60–70 in (152–178 cm), which is 18–28 in above a 42 in eye level. Whether that is uncomfortable depends entirely on viewing distance:

Zero degrees is ideal. Up to about 15° is generally tolerable for a feature-length sitting; beyond that, most people report neck fatigue. Read across the table and the disagreement about fireplaces resolves itself: a mantel mount in a large room with 13 ft of viewing distance can be perfectly comfortable, while the same mount in a small room at 8 ft is not. 2. Heat
Consumer TVs typically specify a maximum ambient operating temperature in the region of 40 °C (104 °F). Confirm the figure in your own manual. Rising heat from a firebox can exceed that in the cavity above a mantel, particularly with a wood-burning unit or a shallow mantel shelf.
Test it rather than assume: run the fireplace for an hour at the level you normally use, then hold a thermometer or an infrared gun where the TV's bottom edge would sit. A mantel shelf projecting 6–8 in deflects a useful amount of heat; no mantel at all above a working firebox is the worst case.
If you want the mantel position anyway
- Pull-down mantel mounts drop the screen 20–30 in and tilt it toward the sofa for viewing, then return it flush. They are the genuine solution, and they are heavy, expensive, and need solid backing.
- A recessed niche built during a renovation lowers the screen into the wall and removes the mantel from the equation.
- A tilting mount alone does not fix the gaze angle. It squares the panel to your eyes, which improves contrast and reduces glare on VA panels, but your neck is still doing the same work.
- Consider not putting the TV there. A room with a fireplace already has a focal point. Siting the screen on an adjacent wall often solves the ergonomics and the decorating problem at once.
Tilt, gaze angle, and glare
Three separate things get conflated under "angle":
- Gaze angle. How far your eyes travel up from level. Set by height and distance. Only fixed by moving the TV.
- Tilt. The panel's rotation, set by the mount. It keeps the screen perpendicular to your line of sight, which matters most on VA-type LCD panels that lose contrast and colour saturation off-axis. OLED and IPS panels are far more forgiving.
- Glare. Reflections from windows and lamps. Tilting a screen down can either cure glare or aim a ceiling light straight back at you. Check at the times of day you actually watch, with daylight and with lamps on.
A practical rule: set the tilt so that a mirror held flat against the screen would reflect your seated head. If you need more than about 15° of tilt to achieve that, the TV is too high.
Studs, VESA, and outlets
The height decision is only useful if the mount is safe and the cables are not on show.
- Find the structure. Timber-framed walls generally have studs at 16 in or 24 in centres. Lag bolts must go into studs; drywall anchors alone are not adequate for a large panel. Masonry and concrete need sleeve or wedge anchors rated for the load; steel studs need their own hardware.
- Check stud spacing against the bracket. Wall plates are usually designed to span two studs at 16 in centres. A wall at 24 in centres, or a stud that lands off-centre from where you want the screen, may call for a full-motion mount or a plywood backer.
- Match the VESA pattern. Common patterns are 200 × 200, 400 × 400, and 600 × 400 mm. Check the TV's spec sheet against the mount's supported range, and confirm the mount's weight rating exceeds the panel's weight with margin.
- Plan power and signal before drilling. A recessed outlet box behind the screen stops the plug from holding the TV off the wall. For in-wall runs, use cable listed for in-wall use. Running a standard power cord inside a wall cavity breaches electrical code in most jurisdictions.
- Dry-fit first. Cut cardboard to the screen's dimensions, tape it at the planned height, and live with it for an evening. It is the cheapest step in the entire job and the one most often skipped.
Common mistakes
- Centring the TV on the wall instead of on the viewer. The most frequent cause of a too-high mount. Walls above fireplaces and consoles have a visual centre well above eye level.
- Assuming a bigger TV goes higher. The centre stays fixed; the bottom edge drops.
- Using the living-room number in a bedroom. Different posture, different answer: roughly 6–12 in higher.
- Mounting before the furniture is chosen. Seat height sets eye level, so a new low-profile sofa can invalidate a perfectly good install.
- Trusting the render. Room photographs and retailer visuals distort vertical proportion badly, and a screen that looks well placed in a photo often is not. That distortion is worth understanding on its own; see why rooms look right online and wrong in real life.
- Ignoring the soundbar. Decide whether it sits above or below the screen before fixing the height, and confirm it will not block the TV's infrared receiver.
Measure your eye level, apply the formula, cardboard-test the result, then drill. Ten minutes with a tape measure beats any rule of thumb.
