IKEA KALLAX Shelf Review: Sizes, Inserts, Weight Limits, and Room Divider Use

KALLAX is IKEA's best-known cube shelf: a white grid of open squares that holds books, bins and decor, and doubles as a sideboard or a room divider. It is cheap and easy to find, but it is also easy to buy the wrong size, overload a shelf or skip the wall anchor. This review lays out every white size, the inserts, the load limits and the anchoring warning from IKEA US listings, so you can plan the wall before you order.

Key points

  • Sizes: Nine white sizes from 16 3/8 x 16 in (1 cube) to 71 5/8 x 71 5/8 in (5 x 5). All are 15 3/8 in deep.
  • Load: IKEA lists 29 lb per shelf. The smaller units add a 55 lb limit on top.
  • Inserts: Doors, drawers and shelves fit 13 in cubes. The door insert has the lowest IKEA rating of the parts we checked, at 4.3.
  • Anchoring: Every listing says it must be securely anchored. Plan the wall fixings before you order.

The short verdict

KALLAX is a good, cheap cube shelf if you plan the load and anchor it to the wall. It comes in nine white sizes from a single cube to a 5 by 5 grid, every shelf is rated for 29 lb, and it works standing, lying as a sideboard, on an optional base, or as a room divider. IKEA's US listings give it ratings from 4.3 to 4.9 on the pieces we checked, but the shelf is particleboard with a paper honeycomb core, so it is a place for books, bins and decor, not a bar for heavy equipment. The door inserts have the lowest rating of the parts we looked at.

The common mistakes are choosing the wrong size for the wall, overloading shelves, and skipping the anchor. Every IKEA listing for the shelf carries a tipping warning that says it must be securely anchored.

How we reviewed it

This is a source-verified review, not a hands-on test. Sizes, prices, load limits, materials and ratings come from IKEA US product pages checked on 24 October 2026. We have not assembled, loaded or lived with a KALLAX for this page, so we give no star rating of our own. Owner experiences come from one published, non-sponsored owner interview and are labeled as anecdotes. Prices change often, so check the listing before you buy.

Wood-effect and black-brown finishes exist in similar sizes, and IKEA also sells pre-built sets with doors, drawers and an underframe. If you plan a wall of KALLAX, measure the wall and the ceiling first. Our room layout planning guide covers the method.

Inserts: doors, drawers, and shelves

Each cube takes a 13 by 13 in insert, sold separately. IKEA lists these insert measurements:

InsertWidth x depth x heightIKEA rating
With door13 x 14 5/8 x 13 in4.3 (3,424 reviews)
With 2 drawers13 x 14 5/8 x 13 in4.5 (3,483 reviews)
With 4 shelves13 x 14 1/8 x 13 inListed, not compared here
With 1 shelf13 x 14 1/8 x 13 inListed, not compared here

IKEA says each insert is dimensioned to fit the shelf unit, and that door and drawer inserts have a finished back so they look good in a room divider. The door insert's 4.3 rating is the lowest of the parts we checked, against 4.7 for the 30 1/8 in square shelf and 4.6 for the 57 7/8 in square one. We did not read enough individual reviews to say why. If you want closed storage, consider fabric boxes or drawer inserts first, or look at them in a store before you buy a full set of doors.

Standing, lying, on a base, or as a divider

IKEA's listings describe several ways to use the same shelf. The 2 by 4 can be placed standing as shelving or lying as a sideboard. The 2 by 2 and some smaller units can be hung on a wall or stood on the floor. The 4 by 4 is described as a room divider. A base on legs is sold separately to lift a unit off the floor and make vacuuming easier.

One unit, three setups. Heights add when you add the base: 30 1/8 in plus 7 1/8 in is about 37 1/4 in.
  • Standing. The default. A 2 by 4 is 57 5/8 in tall, so check it against windowsills, radiators and any sloped ceiling before you choose the spot.
  • Lying as a sideboard. Use a 2 by 4 or a 4 by 2 setup as a low console. IKEA lists a 55 lb limit on the top of the 2 by 4, and a TV bench with underframe lists a maximum TV weight of 35 lb.
  • On a base. IKEA's base on legs is 57 1/2 in wide, 15 3/8 in deep and 7 1/8 in high, and it says it fits a 58 in wide shelf unit. It has adjustable feet.
  • As a divider. The 4 by 4 and 5 by 5 are the realistic sizes. The 4 by 4 ships in two packages of about 61 lb 8 oz and 63 lb 10 oz, and IKEA says two people are needed to assemble it. See our studio apartment layout ideas for how an open divider separates sleeping from living.

Weight limits and what they mean

IKEA lists a maximum load of 29 lb per shelf on every white unit we checked. The smaller units add a 55 lb limit on the top of the unit, and the 2 by 2 lists 44 lb 1 oz as the maximum for the frame wall-hung, while the 1 by 4 lists 66 lb 2 oz. IKEA adds that the maximum load for a wall-hung frame depends on the wall material, so the number is a ceiling, not a guarantee.

A shelf is not a good place for the heaviest things you own. Spread dense items such as books or records across several shelves, and put heavy things low. IKEA does not publish a shelf-sag figure for KALLAX, and we did not find an independent measurement. In a 2024 owner interview, the owner of an eight-cube unit reported no warping after almost three years under stacks of heavy board games, but the same owner reported scratches on the inner sides of the cubes from removing games. The writer added that the finish seems to scratch more easily than melamine would. This is one household's experience, not a test.

Anchoring and materials

Every IKEA listing we checked says: "WARNING! Tipping hazard - this product must be securely anchored. Use suitable screws and plugs for your home. If you are uncertain, seek professional advice." The 2 by 2 and 1 by 4 also carry a falling-hazard warning because they can be wall-hung. Anchor a tall or divider-style unit to the wall with fixings that suit your wall type, and be careful where children or pets can climb.

The shelf frame is made of particleboard, fiberboard, acrylic paint, a honeycomb structure paper filling that IKEA says is 100 percent recycled, and plastic edging. That construction is why the load limits are modest and why you should follow IKEA's anchoring instructions rather than improvising a heavy load.

Who KALLAX suits, and who should skip it

It suits

  • Renters and small spaces that need cheap, modular storage.
  • Anyone who wants open cubes for bins, books and display.
  • A studio that needs an open room divider.

Skip it if

  • You need to store very heavy items on long shelves.
  • You want a long run of shallow bookshelves. See the IKEA BILLY review.
  • You will not anchor it to the wall.

If you want a dresser instead, see our IKEA MALM dresser review, which also covers anchoring and the recall check.

Frequently asked questions

What are the dimensions of the IKEA KALLAX?

KALLAX shelf units are 15 3/8 in (39 cm) deep. Common white sizes include 30 1/8 x 30 1/8 in (2 x 2 cubes), 30 1/8 x 57 5/8 in (2 x 4) and 57 7/8 x 57 5/8 in (4 x 4), according to IKEA US listings checked on 24 October 2026. The full list is in the size table above.

How much weight can a KALLAX shelf hold?

IKEA lists 29 lb (about 13 kg) per shelf on the white units we checked. Several smaller units also list 55 lb on top. The maximum for a wall-hung frame depends on the wall material, so use it as a ceiling, not a guarantee.

Does a KALLAX need to be anchored to the wall?

Yes. Every IKEA listing we checked says the product must be securely anchored, with suitable screws and plugs for your home, and to seek professional advice if you are unsure.

Can you use KALLAX as a room divider?

Yes. IKEA describes the 4 x 4 as usable as a room divider, and says door and drawer inserts have a finished back for that use. The unit still needs anchoring, and the 4 x 4 needs two people to assemble.

Can KALLAX lie on its side or go on legs?

IKEA says the 2 x 4 can be placed standing or lying as a sideboard. It also sells a base on legs, 57 1/2 in wide and 7 1/8 in high, that fits a 58 in wide unit and lifts it off the floor.
