The Sven is a good choice if you want a lounge-friendly leather sofa that will look lived-in, and a poor one if you want a firm, upright seat that stays spotless. Its seat is deeper and higher than most, its leather is the soft, unprotected kind that changes with use, and its single bench seat looks sleek but cannot be rotated to spread wear. At $1,699 it costs less than many full-aniline leather sofas, with the usual online trade-off: you cannot sit on it before you buy.

We have not sat on the sofa. When we test furniture in person we will say so, and only then will we give it a rating.

Dimensions and the seat

Article lists the 88 in Sven at 88 in wide, 38 in deep, and 34 in high, with a 19 in seat height, a 24 in seat depth, and 27 in arms. It weighs 126 lb.

Against the ranges in our sofa size guide, most sofas have a 21 to 24 in seat depth and a 17 to 19 in seat height. The Sven is at the top of both. A 19 in seat is easy to get in and out of, which suits taller people and anyone who finds low sofas hard to rise from. A 24 in depth suits lounging with your legs tucked up; shorter people sitting upright often find their knees do not reach the front edge and use extra cushions at their back.

The leather: what full-aniline means

Article describes the Charme leather as "100% top grain, full-aniline Italian leather." Those are two different things. Top grain is the grade: the outer layer of the hide. Full-aniline is the finish: the leather is dyed through with transparent dyes and left without the pigmented coating that most sofa leather has. What you gain: the softest, warmest feel, a natural look with visible grain, and leather that darkens and develops a patina with use. Article says it "will develop a beautiful vintage patina" and that natural colour variations, wrinkles, and creases are part of its character.
What you give up: protection. With no coating, full-aniline leather absorbs spills and oils, shows scratches, and can fade in direct sun. Article warns that new denim may transfer dye onto it.
Care: Article advises wiping with a damp cloth, avoiding chemical cleaners, and professional cleaning for stubborn stains.

If you want leather that stays looking new, Article's Oxford leathers, used on some Sven versions, are described as semi-aniline, which adds a light protective finish. Check the specific listing before ordering.

Bench seat, webbing, and cushions

Article lists a frame of kiln-dried solid pine with solid rubberwood legs, nylon webbing for the seat suspension, and a fill of high-density polyurethane foam and polyester fibre. The back cushions are loose and removable.

The bench seat. The Sven has one long tufted seat rather than separate cushions. It looks clean and has no gaps to fall between, which suits lying down. The catch is that you cannot swap or flip seat cushions to spread wear, so if one person always sits in the same place, that spot will soften and crease first.
Webbing suspension. Nylon webbing stretched across the frame is common in mid-century designs and keeps the profile slim. Two things stand out. The 72 in leather loveseat costs only $100 less than the 88 in sofa, so measure before choosing the smaller one to save money. And the fabric version costs $400 less than the leather, with the same shape and seat; if you like the design but not the idea of leather that marks, that is the obvious alternative. Delivery: Article's FAQ says front-door delivery is standard, with in-room delivery and in-room plus assembly available as upgrades at checkout, and flat-rate shipping within its standard service area.
Assembly: about 10 minutes, per the product page. The sofa ships in a box about 23 x 42 x 91 in, which is easier to get through a narrow door than an assembled sofa; our sofa size guide has a door-fit calculator.
Returns: 30 days from delivery, in as-new condition, and returns inside the standard service area carry a return shipping fee. Factor that in, since you cannot try the sofa first.
