IKEA HEMNES Daybed Review: Dimensions, Mattresses, and Daily Use

HEMNES combines a daybed, an extending sleeping surface and three drawers. Its compact daytime shape is only half the planning question. You also need space to pull it out, a compatible pair of mattresses and a way to reach the drawers. This review focuses on the current US version, because dimensions from UK and other markets can describe a different mattress setup.

Key points

  • Closed size: The US frame lists 78 3/8 x 41 3/8 in (199 x 105 cm), with a height of 32 5/8 in (83 cm).
  • Mattresses: IKEA specifies two twin mattresses, stacked for single use and side by side for double use.
  • Extended size: The published bed width is 76 3/4 in (195 cm). Verify the full operating envelope before placing nearby furniture.
  • Storage: Three drawers are useful only if you leave room to open and use them.

Who is the HEMNES daybed for?

Consider HEMNES for a room that needs a smaller daytime arrangement and occasional double sleeping, provided you can make space for the complete conversion. For daily use, evaluate the exact mattresses and the conversion routine in person rather than relying on the frame's appearance.

Worth considering if

  • The room serves as both a sitting room and guest bedroom.
  • You can clear its extended area when needed.
  • You want drawer storage and can access it.

Compare alternatives if

  • You want one continuous conventional mattress.
  • The room cannot support the open configuration.
  • You want to avoid arranging two mattresses during conversion.

This verdict is about the documented mechanism and room use. It does not establish comfort, ease of conversion or durability from our own experience.

Current US HEMNES dimensions

These figures are from IKEA US frame 303.493.29, checked October 2026. Preserve the distinction between frame dimensions, bed dimensions and mattress dimensions.

The published extended bed width is not a reason to ignore surrounding frame parts or movement space. Confirm the complete open arrangement from the exact product's dimension drawing and an in-store measurement if the room fit is tight. The listed internal drawer depth is not its opening travel.

Why it needs two mattresses

IKEA specifies two twin mattresses, stacked for the single-bed arrangement and placed next to one another when pulled out for double use. The listed mattress dimensions above are the ones to compare with a candidate mattress. Do not assume every retailer's nominal twin has identical dimensions.

Schematic, not to scale: the conversion changes the mattress arrangement as well as the bed base.

Check the selected mattress recommendation in the current IKEA combination, including thickness and construction. Do not substitute one unusually thick mattress without confirming compatibility. The product instructions also say the pulled-out arrangement is a double bed, not two separate single beds.

Plan three footprints, not one

Mark the closed frame, the fully open arrangement and the space needed to use the drawers. Keep the door swing and access to other furniture on the same sketch. A desk chair or side table may fit by day but occupy the conversion area at night.

ConfigurationPlanning task
ClosedTape the 78 3/8 x 41 3/8 in frame outline.
ExtendedVerify the full open frame and moving envelope, using the published 76 3/4 in bed width as a starting reference.
Drawer useMeasure opening travel and leave space for a person to reach inside.

For an illustrative room 120 in (305 cm) across, subtracting the closed frame width gives 78 5/8 in (200 cm) to the opposite wall. Subtracting the published extended bed width instead gives only 43 1/4 in (110 cm), before accounting for any further projection or furniture. Those arithmetic remainders are not verified walkways.

Check the route when the bed is open as well as closed. Generic concept illustration; verify the full HEMNES operating envelope.

Test the exact operating envelope rather than buying from that remainder. If a desk projects 24 in (61 cm) into the opposite side, it consumes much of the apparent space. Use the clearance guide to assess routes and other storage, then measure the actual mechanism.

Can you use HEMNES as an everyday bed?

The daybed is intended for sleeping, but daily comfort depends on the mattresses and your preferences. We have not slept on it and cannot give an owner-style comfort verdict. Try the mattress combination in the configuration you will use most often.

If you will convert it twice a day, test that process rather than assuming it is trivial from a product animation. If it will remain extended, compare its occupied footprint and mattress arrangement with a conventional bed frame using the bed-frame guide.

Assembly, storage and materials

The checked frame arrives in four packages and includes a slatted base; the frame-only listing excludes mattresses and bedlinen. Review the current assembly documents before delivery and plan room to sort the parts. We have not timed assembly and are not publishing an estimated assembly time as a tested result.

The frame uses a mixture of fibreboard, particleboard and solid pine components. HEMNES is a range name, not evidence that every component of this daybed is solid wood. Follow the care and connector-maintenance instructions for the exact product.

Read current owner reports as individual experiences, with attention to their mattress setup and use pattern. Do not treat either a star average or a single complaint as a test of your proposed configuration.

Before ordering the US daybed

  1. Confirm the US product number and full dimensions.
  2. Choose the required compatible pair of mattresses.
  3. Test closed, open and drawer-access space.
  4. Check delivery access and assembly documents.
  5. Try the relevant mattress and conversion arrangement if daily use is important.
  6. Compare the complete purchase and return terms, including mattresses.

If an extending daybed does not suit the room, the IKEA sofa-bed comparison covers different mechanisms. Choose from the room's actual day and night routines, rather than assuming every compact sleeping product solves the same problem.

Frequently asked questions

What size is the US HEMNES daybed when closed?

The checked US frame lists 78 3/8 in long x 41 3/8 in wide x 32 5/8 in high (199 x 105 x 83 cm). Verify the current product number and selected market before ordering.

Is an extended HEMNES daybed a queen?

Do not order bedding or plan the room from a queen label. IKEA US lists a 76 3/4 in (195 cm) bed width and specifies two twin mattresses side by side. Compare the actual dimensions and centre join.

Does HEMNES need two mattresses?

IKEA specifies two twin mattresses. They stack in the single-bed arrangement and sit side by side in the double arrangement. Check the exact recommended dimensions and mattress combination.

Can HEMNES become two separate single beds?

IKEA's product information says the pulled-out arrangement should be used as a double bed, not as two separate single beds. Follow the exact product instructions.

Is the HEMNES daybed comfortable every night?

We have not slept on it, so we cannot make a tested comfort claim. Evaluate the intended mattress pair, stacked or side by side, and the conversion routine for your everyday use.
